Local youths represent the U.S. in international tournament STAFF REPORT On Dec.
3-5, three students from Harris Martial Arts joined the U.S.A. National Karate
Team to compete in the Karate World Cup for Juniors in Miskoic, Hungary. The
U.S. team consisted of 105 athletes from all over the country. There were over
35 countries represented including Russia, Croatia, Kosovo and Hungary. There
were only 10 medals won by the USA and Tracy Law a 12-year-old black belt won
one of those. She won the first medal of the tournament for the U.S. with a
Bronze medal in Kata (forms). She was in first place after the preliminary
rounds and just got edged out of the gold by two tenths of a point in the final
round. Her sister Samantha (a 10-year-old black belt) made it to the final round
in both of her events and just missed the bronze in a close fight to the
eventual winner, a girl from Croatia. Samantha finished with a 5th and 6th place
in her two events. Michael Moritz, a black belt and a freshman at Central Hardin
high School was also on the team and came back with some battle scars to show
for his hard fought sparring matches. All look forward to training hard and
making the team next year.
