Martial Arts styles vary from country to country and within countries from province to province. On this page I will attempt to clarify the confusion between the many martial arts available.

Lets start with the most  obvious point, which is from which country each style comes from. The countries most associated with the martial arts are China, Japan, Okinawa and Korea. And of course they are not necessarily the only countries from which the martial arts originates from.

Chinese Kung Fu

The popular theory of the origin of the martial arts is that it began with a Indian Buddhist monk called Bodhidharma. Bodhidharma traveled to China and is credited with starting the Chinese art of Kung-Fu. Bodhidarama called his art "Muscle Changing Exercises".

Within the Kung-Fu system there are many different "styles". The list of some Kung-Fu styles are:

  • Wing Chun
  • Tai Chi Chuan
  • Shoalin
  • Wu Shu
  • Choy-Li-Fut

Karate

The popular art of Karate-do has its origin here in the islands of Okinawa.

The four major styles of Karate-do:

  • Shito-Ryu
  • Shoto-Kan
  • Wado-Ryu
  • Goju-Ryu

Other styles of Karate-do are:

  • Chito-Ryu
  • Shorin-Ryu
