Harris students place in tourney --------------------------- STAFF REPORT --------------------------- our students from Harris Arts Karate in he Amateur Athletic Union National Karate Championships July 1-5 at Walt Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla.
In the beginner division, Tracy Law. 10 became the school’s youngest national champion by besting the tournament favorites from Hawaii in bringing home the gold medal in Kate (forms) and a bronze medal in Kumite (sparring). Law’s sister, Samantha, 8, competed in the Novice Division and brought home bronze medals in Kobudo weapons) and Kate. This was the first national champion for both girls, and the sisters are looking forward to the World Championships in Fort Meyers, Fla., in early August. In the Advanced Division, John H Jr.. 16. took a fourth place in Kata. The Intermediate Division had last year’s national champion, Stephanie McClain 17, capture a silver in Kate, and a bronze in Kumite. Sensei John Harris is looking forward to taking his team, which consist of athletes from his Fort Knox and Elizabethtown schools, to the World Championship. Sensei Harris was recently named the Kentucky State Chairman for AAU’s Region 6. He will be responsible for coordinating karate for the state, including the state tournament, and representing the state karate program on the national level. |
