Gauvey upsets national champion at karate tourney

Led by Denise Gauvey, 23 athletes from the Fort Knox Youth Center Karate Club garnered 49 medals at the Kentucky State Tournament Saturday and Sunday in Lexington.

Gauvey, 15, defeated national champion Kimberly McDonald of Erlanger, Ky., for the sparing champi onship of Kentucky.

According to Youth Center head coach John Harris, Gauvey’s performance was equivalent to "winning the Super Bowl." Mc Donald is the recipient of the Joel Farrell Award, given to top athletes in each sport at the 1994 AAU Junior Olympic Games.

"(McDonald) is basically unbeatable," Harris said. "(Guavey) knew of her mystique and prestige before she went (to the tournament). I use her as an example in class a lot."

Guavey earned two silver medals in kata (forms) and weapons.

Fourteen-year-old black belt John H arris won gold medals in kata, sparing, weapons, and team kata.
