Five-year-old karate kid on top of national scene ——————————————— By Pvt.2 Rosalyn Peterkin Inside the turret staff writer ——————————————— Fort Knox family member Cannon Rooker, 5, took top honors in a national karate tournament in Richmond, Va. June 28 in the 54o-6-year-old division of kata, a demonstration of forms and routines practicedd in karate.
"Cannon really en joys the class and I like him being a part of it. He has a great instructor that works well with all the kids," said Missy. Cannon is being trained at Devers Youth Center under the instruction of Sensei John Harris, owner of Harris Martial Arts Karate School in Radcliff "Cannon was the only youth in the tournament to represent Fort Knox. I think it was outstanding for someone from a small community to win," said Rob It was Cannon fourth com petition in kata. He tied for first in a local tourney last February, and also has second and third place finishes under his belt, Speaking of belts, Cannon earned his purple belt Saturday, which represents the third Level of Shito-Ryu, the traditional form of Japanese karate. He said that he loves practicing karate likes the kids he trains with, and has a lot of fun while doing it. He will attend Fort Knox Mudge Elemtary as a kindergardener in August. Other sports he enjoys include soccer and basketball, which he also participates in through youth services. "I encourage people to let their kids join the karate class here," said Missy.
