Gauvey, Irish, Dempsey earn national honors

Fort Knox Youth Center Karate athletes Siobhan Dempsey, Elizabeth Irish, and Denise Gauvey,, medaled Saturday & Sunday at the AAU National Karate Championships in Greenville S.C.

Dempsey, an 8-year-old, finished second in the Kumite (fighting) and fourth in Kata (forms).

"We expected her to finish higher (in Kata), but at the national championships, anything can happen," said Youth Center karate instructor John Harris, adding that Dempsey "is looking forward to fighting (the national champion) again because she said she ‘thinks she’s got her figured out."

Irish, 14, finished third in Kumite and fourth in Kata. Her nose was healing from a previous fracture, according to Harris. Irish lost to the champion, who was in her bracket.

"(The champion) destroyed her competition, (Irish) destroyed her competition," Harris said. "It was apparent that one of those would finish first"

Gauvey, 15, placed second in Kata. "You couldn’t convince anybody in our school that (Gauvey) could win a medal in Kata," Harris said. "But she worked and worked until finally it showed up at this tournament. Second for (her) is just like gold."

The national championships were the team’s final competition of the year.
