3 Harris Martial Arts students excel at international meet

Three students from Harris Martial Arts Karate School recently competed in the eighth annual San Diego Invitational Karate Championships.

There were over 400 competitors from the United States, Venezuela. Mexico and Canada.

In the Advanced Division, 16-year-old Elizabeth Irish gave a strong performance, bringing back a couple of three-foot trophies for a third-place finish in Kate (forms) and a second-place finish in Kumite (sparring).

Irish was only scored on once in all three of her preliminary sparring matches before being outscored in the final match to a worth opponent from Venezuela.

In the Beginner Division, sisters Tracy (9-years-old) and Samantha Law (8-years-old) competed in their first international tournament, being greeted by a coed division of over 50 athletes.

Medals were given to the first eight places in this division.

Tracy, a yellow belt, took sixth place in Kate, and won two hard fought matches in sparring before losing a close one in the third round.

Samantha, a purple belt, placed seventh in Kata, and also performed in Kobudo (weapons) as the only non-teen in the 14-and- under division, where she placed s
