Knox youths win 10 world medals ——————————————— Spc. HERSCHEL GRANGENT Inside the Turret Sports editor ————————————————- John Harris, of Harris Martial Arts Karate School, was not expecting a lot when he took members of his Devers Youth Center class to the world championships in Fort Myers, Fla., Aug. 3. "I only wanted to win one medal, and I would have been happy," Harris said. He was surprised when the 11 martial artists from Fort Knox who competed snatched up 10 medals between them. "I really wasn’t anticipating this at all," Harris said. "This was mainly be cause the best (martial artists) in the world were there. You name the country, and they were there." Bethany Chamberlain, Elizabeth Irish, Tracy Law, and Samantha Law were bronze medalists. Jessica Chamberlain, Stephanie McClain, Tracy Law and Samantha Law took silver medals. Jessica Chamberlain, and McClain also won gold medals. Harris said that the world championships held every four years, was the climax of his team’s tournament sea son. He also said the championships helped him to realize the wealth of talent around him. "(The championships)showed that even in the small communities in and around Fort Knox, we have world champions," Harris said. "Anyone can do it if they just believe." |
